As a new dietetic intern, one of the most valuable lessons I have learned so far is that dietetics is not a profession you navigate alone.
While coursework and placements provide the technical knowledge needed to become a competent dietitian, mentorship plays a vital role in helping students and new professionals feel more confident and supported as they grow into their roles within the profession.
As an intern, I have come to appreciate that mentorship is much more than receiving advice, it is about building relationships and learning from the successes and challenges of others.
They remind us that becoming a dietitian is not simply about acquiring knowledge, it is about developing the confidence, judgement, and professional skills needed to make a meaningful impact on the individuals and communities we serve.
The transition from student to intern, or as you begin a new career, can feel overwhelming. Having someone in your corner who has been through it before and can help guide you through the challenges makes the journey feel much more manageable.
Our mentorship program

The RDAA Mentorship Program, was created to support the growth and career development of dietetic students, interns, new graduates, and practicing dietitians across Alberta.
Through the program, mentees are matched with experienced dietitians based on their goals, interests, practice areas, and availability.
Over a 12-week period, mentor-mentee pairs connect through virtual or in-person meetings to discuss career development, clinical practice, professional challenges, resume and cover letter review, case studies, and more.
Depending on the mentor’s practice setting, opportunities for job shadowing may also be available.
By fostering meaningful connections and professional guidance, the program helps strengthen the dietetics community in Alberta and supports members as they navigate their careers with confidence.
One of our membership perks
Participation as a mentee is included with an RDAA membership.
Members interested in joining the program can sign up through the RDAA Member Portal, while dietitians interested in serving as mentors are encouraged to apply and share their expertise with the next generation of professionals.
